Portion of Lot G to Close March 17

In order to break ground on Phase II of the Parking Deck III project, the 2 rows of Parking Lot G closest to Rappahannock River Lane will close on Monday, March 17. These 2 rows of Parking Lot G will be blocked off; any vehicles left in this section on March 17 will be towed.

Phase II of Parking Deck III adds 1,000 spaces to the 1,650 spaces in Phase I. The remainder of Lot G will stay open at this time, but eventually other sections will close as the parking deck project progresses.

If you have any questions, contact Parking Services at parking@gmu.edu.

HR/Payroll

Getting in Touch With HR & Payroll. If you're not sure who to call about a question or concern you have or you can't reach the specific person in HR & Payroll to whom you would like to speak, give our Customer Service Center team a call at 993-2600. As you can imagine, HR & Payroll staff are frequently helping other faculty and staff and may not be immediately available to answer your call or email. Our Customer Service Center team frequently will be able to answer your question, and if not, can refer you to someone who is available to help. If you wish to speak with someone directly and they don't pick up the phone, email them or leave a voice mail. We all try very hard to return all calls/emails within 24 hours. But, if you have an emergency or a very timely matter, it is best to call the Customer Service Team as they can help expedite your situation.

Payroll March Madness (9-month Faculty Pay Plan Open Enrollment). Now that Mason is the CAA Champion for 2008 (Go Mason!), this seems an appropriate time to remind all 9-month faculty that we are also in Payroll March Madness, that time when 9-month faculty may elect to change from 9-month paid over 12 months to 9-month paid over 9 months or vice versa. Open enrollment will be held throughout March ending on Monday, March 31, 2008. The choice made during open enrollment will be effective at the start of the next academic year on August 25, 2008. If no election is made during open enrollment, the 9-month faculty member will remain in his or her current pay plan. The decision made is in effect for the next academic year and cannot be changed until the next open enrollment period in March 2009. An open enrollment form is available on the HR & Payroll website.

Vote This Week for Staff Senators

The Staff Senate is holding elections to fill open seats this week. Ballots and statements by the candidates are available at the Staff Senate website at www.gmu.edu/senate/staff/. All permanent full-time classified, part-time classified, or non-student wage employees may vote in this election.

Take a minute to read the candidate statements and vote for the candidates you believe would represent you best. To vote, follow the link above, read the candidate statements, download the Ballot, and return it by 5 pm on Thursday, March 20.

Call Sarah Knapp at 993-4141 with any questions.

Amazing Recycling Factoid

Did you know that Americans throw away enough office and writing paper annually to build a wall 12 feet high stretching from Los Angeles to New York City? Please recycle.

For questions or comments call 993-2547 or email rlim2@gmu.edu.

Transportation and Construction Projects Highlighted in the Mason Gazette

This week’s Mason Gazette feature article highlights a changing culture of transportation on campus and in the community. Desperate for commuting alternatives due to rising gas prices and environmental concerns, Mason faculty, staff and students are taking their feet off their gas pedals and putting them on their bike pedals. Go to http://gazette.gmu.edu/ to read more about this evolving trend and how you too can get started.

In addition, each week, articles and bulletins in the Gazette will detail major transportation and construction news from the campuses, such as parking closures and openings, new buildings progress and changing traffic patterns. Bookmark the Mason Gazette or make it your home page to get the most up-to-date construction project reports.

The Democracy Project Speaker

The Democracy Project presents Dr. Jim Pfiffner, Power Play: President Bush and the Constitution on March 24 at 1:30 pm in the Johnson Center Cinema.

President Bush has asserted extraordinary executive power during his two terms in office. He has denied the writ of Habeas Corpus to individuals, he has evaded U.S. laws against torture, he has ordered secret surveillance of Americans, which is against the law, and he has used signing statements to undermine Article I of the Constitution. This talk will examine these policies and suggest that the precedents set are dangerous to the American Republic.

The theme of professor hook's talk is Democratic Education: What is the role of higher education in promoting participatory democracy and social justice? After the presentation there will be a reception in Student Union I, Patriot's Lounge until 6:00 pm.

To prepare for hooks' visit, the Mason community is invited to read a chapter entitled Democratic Education from her book, Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope.
