The Writing Center is Looking for Peer Tutors

The Writing Center is interested in recruiting upper-division students in majors across the university for CHSS 390: Peer Tutoring in Writing in the Disciplines. If you teach upper-division courses, writing-intensive courses, or English 302, you can help us identify potential peer tutor candidates who are talented writers with good interpersonal skills.

CHSS 390 is a one-credit experiential learning course (repeatable up to 3 credits), which includes six weeks of training and tutoring with observation after which students go on to become full-fledged tutors in the Writing Center. For information about the course, you and the students you identify can go to: http://writingcenter.gmu.edu/peertutor.html. Past peer tutors have found their work in the Writing Center to be an excellent way to demonstrate leadership, community involvement, and commitment to academic success.

If you have a student in mind, you may either let them know about this opportunity or send a name(s) and contact information to Terry Myers Zawacki, tzawacki@gmu.edu, who will contact them.

Student Health Announces Change in Immunizations

As of Fall 2008, all incoming students are required to be screened for TB (tuberculosis). The new Immunization record form can be found online at the Student Health Services website http://www.gmu.edu/student/hcs/form.pdf. All information pertaining to immunizations (forms, requirements, and prices) can be found on the website at http://www.gmu.edu/student/hcs/imm.html . Direct students to our website for the updated form and further information.

If you have any questions, contact Shannon Baine at 993-2135.

Reminder - Food and Beverage Purchases

If your end of the academic year festivities include plans to serve food and/or beverages, remember that specific policies apply to these types of purchases. In most cases, a Food and Beverage Authorization form should be completed and approved before the event. The Food and Beverages Manual with complete information about the policy and specific procedures is available at http://fiscal.gmu.edu/Procedures/FoodBev.Manweb.pdf.

Also, if a business other than Mason’s on-campus food service, Sodexho, will cater your event, that caterer should be registered with eVA, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s automated procurement system, and the catering purchase recorded as an eVA order. A list of eVA registered caterers in the local area is available.

Call Joey Carls 993-2089 or Maureen Strauch 993-2620 with questions or for assistance.

Faculty and Staff Can Donate Time, Contributions

The second annual Patriot Pack Out gives faculty and staff a fun way to utilize their Volunteer Service Leave. The week-long event primarily gives students moving out of the residence halls an opportunity to donate clothes, appliances and nonperishable food to local charities.

Faculty and staff are needed to volunteer for two-hour shifts between May 9 and 16 to join the recycling staff and gather the donated items at various drop locations around the Fairfax Campus. Those who wish to volunteer may select a specific shift on the Patriot Pack Out Sign sign-up sheet.

In addition to the students, faculty and staff can make donations to the Patriot Pack Out. On May 13, from 7:30 am to 9:30 am Mason employees can drop off their bagged donations at the Interstate Worldwide truck located behind Harrison Hall on Presidents Park Drive on the Fairfax Campus.

Volunteers Needed for Commencement

Here's your chance to be part of the happiest event on campus. The Office of Events Management is soliciting volunteers to work at the Information Kiosks in the Patriot Center for Commencement on Saturday, May 17. Volunteers need to arrive at the Patriot Center at 8:30 am (continental breakfast is available), doors open at 9:00 am, and Commencement begins at 10:00 am. The volunteers are welcome to stay for the ceremony or may leave around 10:30 a.m.

If you would like to volunteer, call Beth Grohnke at 993-2124 or sgrohnke@gmu.edu

Middle East Studies Program Film Series

April 21 - Encounter Point
If you lost your loved ones to violence; if you spent ten years in prison; if conflict drove you from your home; would you seek revenge or struggle for peace? Encounter Point is an 85-minute feature documentary film that follows a former Israeli settler, a Palestinian ex-prisoner, a bereaved Israeli mother and a wounded Palestinian bereaved brother who risk their lives and public standing to promote a nonviolent end to the conflict. Their journeys lead them to the unlikeliest places to confront hatred within their communities. USA - English, Arabic & Hebrew with English subtitles.

April 28 - Meeting Resistance
What would you do if America was invaded? Meeting Resistance raises the veil of anonymity surrounding the Iraqi insurgency by meeting face to face with individuals who are passionately engaged in the struggle, and documenting for the very first time, the sentiments experienced and actions taken by a nation's citizens when their homeland is occupied. Voices that have previously not been heard, male and female, speak candidly about their motivations, hopes and goals, revealing a kaleidoscope of human perspectives. Meeting Resistance is the missing puzzle piece in understanding the Iraq war. Directed by Steve Connors and Molly Bingham. Through its unprecedented access to these clandestine groups, Meeting Resistance focuses the spotlight on the other side, clarifying why the violence in Iraq continues to this day and providing a deeper understanding of both the toll of occupation and the human condition of resistance. USA-Arabic and English.

May 6 - The Yacoubian Building
An eye-catching construction, The Yacoubian Building in Cairo was long regarded as the last word in comfort and elegance. Nowadays the veneer has cracked and the shine has dulled to reveal the truth underneath the facade. Through interwoven stories of a number of the residents, the film paints a portrait of corruption, fundamentalism, prostitution, homosexuality, and drugs in central Cairo and creates a vibrant but socially critical picture of contemporary Egypt. In Arabic w/English Subtitles

All films are shown at 7:30 pm in the Johnson Center, Cinema.

For more information about the new Middle East Studies program, contact: Dr. Bassam Haddad, Director, 993-2962 or bhaddad@gmu.edu. Sponsored by Phi Beta Delta, The International Honor Society and the Center for Global Studies.

College of Health and Human Services Events

Thursday, April 24,
4th Annual Quality Improvement of the Year Award. Health Administration and Policy in the College of Health and Human Services, will host the awards at the Marriott International in Falls Church, VA.

The Improvement of the Year Award celebrates successful improvement efforts in health care organizations and ensures that the hard work of improvement teams is appreciated and acknowledged. A number of prestigious awards of this type exist locally and nationally. However, current awards focus on an entire organization's improvement effort, or are given to participants within one organization. The Improvement of the Year Award focuses on project-by-project reviews across organizations. As such, the Improvement of the Year Award offers improvement teams a unique opportunity for recognition, not solely within their supporting organization, but among all of the leading health care organizations. This award is not intended to reinvent the wheel, but to fill in a gap for communication and recognition among health care organizations in the region. In addition to the recognition that the recipients of the award received, the award brings together submitting improvement specialists from various organizations so they can collaborate. All projects received benchmarked analysis of their practices, comparing their improvement effort to peer institutions in the Center's national database of more than 200 improvement efforts. Winners of the IOYA will be highlighted at the College's 2008 Symposium on Health and Human Services Research.
