Announcements

PE Building to Close on May 1

Due to renovations the PE Building will close on Thursday, May 1. The PE Building Linn Gym anticipates a re-open date of August 10.

Information Services Becomes University Information

To better reflect the mission of Information Services, effective immediately the departmental name has been changed to University Information. University Information is responsible for 7 information centers on 3 campuses; the university switchboard (993-1000); the campus printed and on-line telephone directories (People Finder); the master calendar of events (Today@Mason); a weekly digest of announcements, events and training (Mason E-files); an information class about Mason (Mason 101); campus maps; and a number of informational web sites. The phone number for University Information remains the same, 993-1005, but the new web address is info.gmu.edu.

Volunteers Needed for Commencement

Here's your chance to be part of the happiest event on campus. The Office of Events Management is soliciting volunteers to work at the Information Kiosks in the Patriot Center for Commencement on Saturday, May 17. Volunteers need to arrive at the Patriot Center at 8:30 am (continental breakfast is available), doors open at 9:00 am, and Commencement begins at 10:00 am. The volunteers are welcome to stay for the ceremony or may leave around 10:30 am.

If you would like to volunteer, call Beth Grohnke at 993-2124 or sgrohnke@gmu.edu

Patriot Pack Out Provides Opportunities to Donate and Volunteer

The second annual Patriot Pack Out gives faculty and staff a fun way to utilize their Volunteer Service Leave. The week-long event primarily gives students moving out of the residence halls an opportunity to donate clothes, appliances and nonperishable food to local charities.

Faculty and staff are needed to volunteer for two-hour shifts between May 9 and 16 to join the recycling staff and gather the donated items at various drop locations around the Fairfax Campus. Those who wish to volunteer may select a specific shift on the Patriot Pack Out sign-up sheet.

In addition to the students, faculty and staff can make donations to the Patriot Pack Out. On May 13, from 7:30 am to 9:30 am Mason employees can drop off their bagged donations at the Interstate Worldwide truck located behind Harrison Hall on Presidents Park Drive on the Fairfax Campus.

Coaching Corner

Supervisors have many different hats to wear at work that correspond with the various roles they are expected to fill. The hats they wear change depending on the situation at hand. Among these are:
• Coach
• Administrator
• Leader
• Disciplinarian
• Teacher
• Mentor

As a supervisor, it is important for you to be able to distinguish the difference between your role as a coach and the other hats you wear. While the role of a supervisor is many things, including providing direction, the role of a coach is guiding individual employees toward the best course of action without telling them what to do.

When you are wearing the coaching hat, it is important to ask thought provoking and open ended questions, such as
• What will happen if…
• What are your other options?
• What support do you need to accomplish that?
• Where do you go from here?
• If the same thing happened again, what would you do differently?

Asking these open ended questions will elicit responses which can simultaneously help clarify the issue, clarify perceptions, identify necessary changes, and help determine next steps for personal or professional growth. Occasionally when you are in the middle of coaching you may have to switch hats. For example, while coaching one of your employees you may learn of a problem, such as an issue with workload or work schedule. At this point it is okay for you to switch back into your supervisory role, because it is important to address the situation as a supervisor.

Regardless of which hat you are wearing, it is essential to center your focus on that particular role in order to achieve an optimal outcome.

Online Tutorial SkillPort Special Maintenance Announcement

On occasion, it becomes necessary for SkillPort to schedule a special maintenance window to ensure the ongoing reliability of our hosting infrastructure. The last special maintenance window occurred on December 2, 2006. We have scheduled another one-time event for Saturday, May 3. On Saturday, May 3 an extended maintenance window will start at 6:00 am and complete no later than 5:00 pm. During this time the SkillPort and OLSA applications will not be available to customers.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. This advanced notification is being provided to allow for planning and preparation in an effort to minimize the impact on your operations.

Middle East Studies Program Film Series

April 28 - Meeting Resistance
What would you do if America was invaded? Meeting Resistance raises the veil of anonymity surrounding the Iraqi insurgency by meeting face to face with individuals who are passionately engaged in the struggle, and documenting for the very first time, the sentiments experienced and actions taken by a nation's citizens when their homeland is occupied. Voices that have previously not been heard, male and female, speak candidly about their motivations, hopes and goals, revealing a kaleidoscope of human perspectives. Meeting Resistance is the missing puzzle piece in understanding the Iraq war. Directed by Steve Connors and Molly Bingham. Through its unprecedented access to these clandestine groups, Meeting Resistance focuses the spotlight on the other side, clarifying why the violence in Iraq continues to this day and providing a deeper understanding of both the toll of occupation and the human condition of resistance. USA-Arabic and English.

May 6 - The Yacoubian Building
An eye-catching construction, The Yacoubian Building in Cairo was long regarded as the last word in comfort and elegance. Nowadays the veneer has cracked and the shine has dulled to reveal the truth underneath the facade. Through interwoven stories of a number of the residents, the film paints a portrait of corruption, fundamentalism, prostitution, homosexuality, and drugs in central Cairo and creates a vibrant but socially critical picture of contemporary Egypt. In Arabic w/English Subtitles.

All films are shown at 7:30 pm in the Johnson Center, Cinema.

For more information about the new Middle East Studies program, contact: Dr. Bassam Haddad, Director, 993-2962 or bhaddad@gmu.edu. Sponsored by Phi Beta Delta, The International Honor Society and the Center for Global Studies.
