Phishing Attack Update
Keeping the Mason Community Alert to Potential Email Hazards

On September 9, a new phishing attack circulated through the Mason community with the subject line—Verification.   This email attempted to collect Mason user names and passwords under the threat of account termination.   It was sent from a fictitious email account called GMU Support.

It is Mason’s policy to never request personal, financial or sensitive information through email, and any such request should be a warning sign of possible fraud.  Do not reply or click on any links in such emails, simply delete them.

Phishing attacks routinely target only a small number (200 or less) of the Mason population, bypassing the strong anti-phishing firewall and security shield measures in place (Mason blocks over 99% of the malicious email traffic received).

To stay safe and secure:  (1) always question unsolicited emails; (2) never provide personal/financial/sensitive information in response to an email; and (3) refrain from clicking on embedded links in emails.

Awareness.  The Best Way to Fight Phishing.

Kid's Clothing and Equipment Swap

The Support Group for Working Mothers at Mason in conjunction with the Office of Sustainability will be hosting a kids' clothing and equipment swap September 28 - 30 in Room 116 of the Johnson Center. Participants are encouraged to bring something in order to take something away, so there will be no exchange of money, just a good old fashioned swap meet. Collections only will begin at 9:00 am on Monday, September 28 and we will open for business from 12:00 noon - 4:00 pm on Monday, and 9:00 am - 4:00 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Monday, we will also be giving out Mason Dining Wooden Nickels when you bring a bag of clothes or item to donate to the swap.  These are good for a dollar off your food and beverage purchases, so stop by before you pick up your morning coffee (while supplies last, so come early).

Think of us when you are cleaning out your closets this fall.  We are especially interested in outerwear, clothing items up to size 12 along with children's toys and equipment you no longer need.  We will even have a reserved spot in the JC loading dock, if you have large items to deliver.  Everything left over will be donated to Salvation Army at the end of the swap meet on Wednesday, September 30.

If you have questions or need additional information, contact Heather Aleknavage at 993-2295 or haleknav@gmu.edu.
