Helpful Hints for Using the New Voice Mail System

This week’s Helpful Hint is how to leave a message for people with enhanced voice mail (EVM).  EVM sends voice mail messages to the user's e-mail inbox, allows for fax messages, and forwards the call to the user's cell phone/alternate number using the Find Me/Follow Me feature.

EVM users will have a standard greeting followed by an instructional announcement.  These announcements will instruct the caller to:

  • Press one to leave a message,
  • Remain on the line to send a fax, or
  • Press two to reach at an alternate location (if the Find Me/Follow Me feature is programmed)

If you hear this instructional announcement, you must press one to leave a message. Much more information is provided on our web site at http://voicemail.gmu.edu. The web site is continually updated, so visit it from time to time as answers to your questions may be found there.

For additional assistance, contact Telecom Admin at 993-3546.

• available job openings

Start researching employers today. Check out the Fair Student Preparation web site: http://careers.gmu.edu/jobfair/

To help students get ready, employers will be on hand to critique resumes on Thursday, October 1 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm and on Monday, October 5 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Johnson Center, Room 116.

HR/Payroll

Performance Evaluation Season Underway. While informal feedback can and should be given throughout the performance year, the start of the new academic year heralds the beginning of the formal performance evaluation process for administrative/professional faculty and classified employees. Performance evaluations are a key form of communication between a supervisor and his or her employees. Open and honest evaluations of performance are an opportunity for supervisors and employees to discuss job interests, issues encountered, areas for improvement and departmental and employee goals. Performance appraisals for Administrative/Professional faculty and Classified staff are due in HR & Payroll by Monday, October 26. For details see the memorandum from Linda Harber.

2009 Member Benefit Profiles are Available. Enrolled in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS)? Your annual benefit statement, the Member Benefit Profile (MBP) is now available at myVRS. Kaiser HMO Participants. A few Kaiser Permanente HMO plan members may have received a letter from Kaiser stating that their health coverage ended as of the end of August 2009. This was due to an error by the State Department of Human Resource Management file transmitter to Kaiser HMO. We have contacted the state and asked them to remit a new file to Kaiser and are doing our best to identify those affected and correct this error with Kaiser HMO. If you received a letter indicating your coverage has ended contact a member of the benefits team at 993-2600 and we will ensure that your coverage is corrected with Kaiser.

Kids' Clothing and Equipment Swap

The Support Group for Working Mothers at Mason in conjunction with the Office of Sustainability will be hosting a kids' clothing and equipment swap September 28 - 30 in Room 116 of the Johnson Center. Participants are encouraged to bring something in order to take something away, so there will be no exchange of money, just a good old fashioned swap meet. Collections only will begin at 9:00 am on Monday, September 28 and we will open for business from 12:00 noon - 4:00 pm on Monday, and 9:00 am - 4:00 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Monday, we will also be giving out Mason Dining Wooden Nickels when you bring a bag of clothes or item to donate to the swap.  These are good for a dollar off your food and beverage purchases, so stop by before you pick up your morning coffee (while supplies last, so come early).

Think of us when you are cleaning out your closets this fall.  We are especially interested in outerwear, clothing items up to size 12 along with children's toys and equipment you no longer need.  We will even have a reserved spot in the JC loading dock, if you have large items to deliver.  Everything left over will be donated to Salvation Army at the end of the swap meet on Wednesday, September 30.

If you have questions or need additional information, contact Heather Aleknavage at 993-2295 or haleknav@gmu.edu.
