Artist Presents on Intersection of Art, Science, and Transformation The Center for Consciousness and Transformation presents sculptor Rebecca Kamen and composer Susan Alexjander, who will discuss their collaboration on the genesis of Divining Nature: An Elemental Garden, a large-scale sculpture installation currently on view at the Greater Reston Art Center. Kamen was inspired by the Periodic Table of Elements and has used Buddhist mandalas representing a cosmological view of the Universe to create the layout and the concept for this elemental garden. Because gardens have always served both functionally and metaphorically as an intersection of art and science with nature, they are sites of transformation. Similar to the metamorphosis of an atom that becomes a new element when the number and arrangement of its parts changes, Divining Nature: An Elemental Garden transforms chemistry’s Periodic Table of letters and numbers into a garden of sculptural elements based on geometry and atomic number. The presentation is on Tuesday, October 20, at 1:30 pm in Room 1007 of the new School of Art Building. All are welcome. For more information, contact infocct@gmu.edu. |

Judaism, Monotheism, and the Political What is the relationship between monotheism and the political? Is biblical monotheism compatible with modern Western democracy or does biblical monotheism fund intolerance and conflict with a culture of democratic pluralism? Recently, a number of leading philosophers and political thinkers including Alain Badiou, Giorgio Agamben and Regina Schwartz have renewed modern, European criticisms of Jewish monotheism as particularistic and conflict-generating. In this symposium, a panel of leading scholars of Jewish philosophy and political thought will address the question of the relationship between Judaic monotheism and the political. Panelists will pay particular attention to an analysis of the biblical account of Mosaic monotheism and the impact of this account upon the openness of the Judaic legal tradition. Panelists will use these analyses to respond to recent challenges to Jewish particularity within contemporary political philosophy. The symposium will be held on Wednesday, October 28 from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm in Research I, Room 163. For more information visit religious.gmu.edu/events or contact Randi Rashkov, rrashkov@gmu.edu, 993-2778. |

Testimonies from Peru's Civil War: Recovery and Reconciliation in an Andean Village On Tuesday October 20, 5:30pm, in the Johnson Center Library Instruction Room, Gerardo Fernández Mendoza and José Pablo Baraybar will be speaking about their experiences and the work of EPAF, the Peruvian Forensic Anthropology Team. In spring of 2008, EPAF began unearthing the largest mass grave from Peru's 20-year internal armed conflict, which cost an estimated 70,000 lives. By the end of the summer, EPAF had recovered 92 human remains from the gravesite at Putis and discovered clear evidence of the role of the Peruvian Armed Forces in the massacre. Mendoza is an indigenous leader from the reconstituted village of Putis. Baraybar, EPAF's Executive Director, will discuss the findings from the exhumation at Putis and elaborate on its potential to serve as a model for empowering the victims of mass violence in Peru.
