Overview:
University Information seeks enthusiastic and creative volunteers to facilitate historical tours on the Fairfax Campus. The docent positions will communicate historic information regarding George Mason University to audiences of special guests/VIPs, donors, faculty/staff and/or community member/leaders. In addition, the Historical Tour Docent serves as a historical guide during events. The goals of the Historical Tour Program are to highlight the history of George Mason University as well as showcase the growth of Mason. All volunteers will have the opportunity to receive recognition, certificates and earn points for successful tours completed.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Lead tour groups through a multiple-station tour on a medium-large size campus setting. Orally communicate historical content to diverse audience (10-20 people). Answer questions regarding George Mason University history and culture and engage the audience in conversation. Attend and actively participate in ongoing docent and customer service trainings.
Supervised By:
The University Tour program is supervised by the Associate Director, within the University Information Department. All docents shall report to the Associate Director.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a strong interest in providing personal attention to target audiences within a public relations environment. Desired volunteers must possess flexibility, interest or knowledge of history specific to George Mason University. Additionally, Docents must have a friendly, approachable, positive attitude and be responsible.
Commitment and Training Requirements:
A commitment of two semesters and 10 hours/month is required. Docents are needed for scheduled tours on Fridays and occasionally Saturday, and Sunday, as well as for special requests or major events on the George Mason University, Fairfax Campus.
